Interlocking system

Design Luigi Glorini –
An office product totally free of mechanical joints, using materials from sustainable cultivation included in a logic of controlled culling with production cycles with reduced environmental impact.

From the synergy between CUF Milano Lab and the Direction came the idea of experimenting with an office product totally devoid of mechanical joints, using materials from sustainable cultivation inserted in a logic of controlled culling and having production cycles with reduced environmental impact.
At the same time, the intention was to recover ancient systems for processing wood and its derivatives that would maintain a high craftsmanship quality of the workmanship, even resorting to the use of modern computerised production chains.
Through the use of a CNC nexting machining centre, which allows machining and sectioning with optimised cuts and reduced waste, the three basic elements that make up the Interlocking System are obtained. Top, side and crosspiece fit into each other by means of tenon or bayonet joints.
The interlocking of the various components with each other defines the spatial volume of the operating workstation. The system has a modular serial extension: from the minimum configuration of two face-to-face operators, by integrating components, configurations with 4, 6 and more operators can be obtained. In the case of multiple workstations on the shared side, the crossbars engage in a staggered manner. The tops are designed to be able to engage with the crossbars below, however they are arranged. The material used for this experimental product is 30 mm thick calibrated Italian poplar plywood finished with matt transparent-bio varnish.
